Small Businesses Still Struggle to Hire, Even as Economy Grows

America’s economy is growing, but small businesses say finding workers remains one of their toughest challenges.

A new report from the
National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)
shows that nearly 40% of small business owners still have job openings they can’t fill. Many cite a shortage of qualified applicants, with trades, construction, and service industries hit the hardest.

Owners are offering higher pay and benefits, but competition from larger companies makes it tough. Child care costs and housing shortages also keep some people out of the workforce.

Even with steady customer demand, owners warn that staffing gaps could slow growth. Many are cutting hours, raising prices, or turning to technology to cope. Longer-term fixes may include job training, affordable housing, and better child care.
